Doctors & Management Staff
Meet the experienced and friendly doctors and staff who make AccuVision EyeCare Optometry a proud provider of vision care products and services in Livermore.
Dr. John Michelsen
I was born in Guam and spent most of my childhood in the South Pacific. After attending high school in Hawaii, I received my doctorate in optometry from the University of California – Berkeley Optometry School in 2008. I then proceeded to complete a residency program in ocular pathology at the Fresno VA Hospital. As a resident, I learned how to manage and treat severe eye diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and much more. This specialized training helped me appreciate how intricate the eye is and interconnected it is to the rest of the body. Expertise in ocular diseases helps me not only educate patients on their conditions but also enables me to provide personalized care and guidance in treatment options.
I always strive to make people feel like they’ve been taken care of and help them understand everything they want to about the eyes. I feel it is important for all to be able to look and see their best for years to come. This is one of the reasons, during my residency, that I organized and led a team of doctors and students on two separate philanthropic missions to my mother’s home island of the Republic of Palau in the South Pacific, to provide free eye exams and glasses to over 4,000 people, about 16% of the entire population of 25,000.
I enjoy fitting specialty contact lenses. Oftentimes these patients have been turned away elsewhere or told that they “can’t” wear contacts. These patients are not able to see well with conventional glasses due to a number of different corneal diseases or complications from injury or surgeries. To help them to see again with specialty contact lenses has been very rewarding.
During my spare time, I enjoy being outdoors, traveling, and experiencing new places. I have a special interest in landscape photography because I get to really focus on what makes a place special. Astrophotography also gives me a small glimpse into an amazing landscape that few ever get to see or appreciate.
Dr. Michelsen is certified by the State Board of Optometry and is licensed at the highest level under California and Hawaii law to diagnose & medically treat eye diseases including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, eye infections, and dry eye syndromes.
Dr. Emmeline Jang
Dr. Emmeline Jang was born on the East Coast but mostly grew up in the Bay Area. After graduating from Foothill High in Pleasanton, she attended UC Berkeley for her BA in molecular & cell biology with an emphasis in neurobiology. While at Cal, she worked for the Dean of the School of Optometry in his laboratory performing amblyopia research, studying how lazy eyes could be improved in adulthood.
Dr. Jang made the move back to the East Coast to attend the State University of New York College of Optometry, in the heart of Manhattan, NYC. While working towards her doctorate degree, Dr. Jang got involved with different organizations that focused on volunteer work to provide vision care for the underserved, even flying to Nicaragua to give eye exams in communities with no eye clinics. She also served as a leader in her class council. She did her clinical externship work at Ezra Medical Center and East New York Hospital, both located in Brooklyn that had special emphases in vision therapy and ocular disease. After earning her doctorate from SUNY Optometry in 2014, Dr. Jang stayed in NY and practiced in Manhattan and the Bronx for the next 3 years. She finally moved back home to the Bay Area to be with her family in 2018 and has been with our practice since.
Dr. Jang strives to provide patients with a thorough, complete examination by attentively listening to the patients and making sure to address all of their eye concerns during their visit. Not only does Dr. Jang provide eye care for the general population, but she is also particularly interested in providing Myopia Management for children, to help slow down how quickly kids’ eyesight deteriorates as we are now in a society with lots of screen use, near work, and where Myopia (nearsightedness) has become a global epidemic.
Dr. Jang is trilingual, proficient in Spanish and Korean, and able to perform examinations in both. During her spare time, she enjoys traveling, photography, hiking, snowboarding, and exploring new restaurants in search of amazing food.
Dr. Jang is certified by the State Board of Optometry and is licensed at the highest level under California law to diagnose & medically treat eye diseases including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, eye infections, and dry eye syndromes.
Dr. Connie Husserl
Dr. Connie Husserl was born and raised in the California Central Coast. After graduating from UC Davis with a Bachelors in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior and a minor in Chican@ Studies, she went on to study at UC Berkeley School of Optometry. She completed her clinical externships at the San Francisco VA and Fresno VA, both emphasizing ocular disease. She is fascinated by how you can tell a great deal about someone’s health just by looking into their eyes and how she can contribute to someone’s overall health. During eye exams, she can detect early signs of medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and more. She finds it rewarding that her attentive care can help provide a better quality of life for patients.
While striving to complete her doctorate degree, Dr. Husserl led and participated in three mission trips to Nicaragua to provide free eye exams to communities that did not have access to eye care. This was only the beginning of her desire and efforts to provide quality care to all. While caring for patients, she strives to listen to their specific needs and provide options to help them feel and see better. She believes educating patients is key and aims to thoroughly inform patients of their best options, whether it is to see clearer or treat possible eye diseases.
She is skilled in speaking Spanish and English. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, board games, and home improvement projects. She also enjoys fish keeping and finding ways to add color and landscape to her aquarium.
Dr. Husserl is certified by the State Board of Optometry and is licensed at the highest level under California law to diagnose & medically treat eye diseases including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, eye infections, and dry eye syndromes.
